The "Russian New Year" is one of the most important holidays and is definietly a favorite holiday for all children in Russia. They also put up some trees in their houses. Except they don't call them Christmas trees they call them call them New Year's tree. There are many things in Russia that is made of all entirely made of snow and ice around it--sculptures of animals, castles, and fairy tale charecters. There are even building made of snow and ice with places to climb, slide, and play around. These New Year's parties usually take place in a big hall or in a school gymnasim. But before leaving school for new years break, they celebrate by having New Year's parties. There is even a compitition held in some schools that have the best school ornament. Each school gets to put several of their ornaments on a tree. They put tags with the school name on the ornaments so everybody in town will know wich school made wich ornament. Children also dress up in costumes for the school party. The costumes are a lot like the costumes we wear for Halloween. Many children don't buy their costumes from the stores, but they make their own costumes! There is even a costume competition on who has the best costume at the party, and the person who wins gets a special surprise--a toy, a game,or a bag of chocolates. On New Year's Eve, Russian families gather for huge homemade meals. At 10 minutes before midnight, the Russian prsident delivers a speech on telivision--- and everyone watches. After the speech, the "offical" clock of Russia -- a huge clock on Spasskaya tower in Moscow-- is shown on telivision. Everyone across Russia counts down with the clock to midnight and the New Year! After this, children go to bed so that a speical someone brings them gifts. in Russia, the people there don't call him Santa, they call him Ded Moroz. instead of useing reindeer to deliver presents. Ded Moroz uses three horses.
